Justin Drake, a researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, announced a new framework for the long-term development of the network called "Lean Ethereum." This aims to simplify the design of the protocol while addressing security risks posed by future quantum computers.

The Road Map published on the Ethereum Foundation's blog on July 31 emphasizes simplicity, security, and efficiency as new priorities for the network's base layer.

Lean Ethereum proposes a simplified approach to how Ethereum verifies transactions, stores data, and protects itself, pursuing minimalism by reducing complexity.

According to Mr. Drake, the goal is to facilitate the maintenance of the Ethereum core protocol and ultimately make it more robust over the long term.

Security is a major driving force behind this proposal. Mr. Drake emphasizes the need for proactive defense against threats posed by quantum computing, which is believed to potentially break widely used cryptographic tools. Lean Ethereum outlines the transition to post-quantum signature schemes, laying the groundwork to maintain the security of Ethereum in the face of these emerging technologies.

"We stand at the dawn of a new era. Millions of transactions per second, quantum attackers. How will Ethereum fuse extreme performance with uncompromising security and decentralization?" Mr. Drake noted.
