OpenAI's revenue has seen a big pump of 50 times, and a major update for ChatGPT may be coming next month.
Main Text
Next month marks the one-year anniversary of ChatGPT's launch. OpenAI is brewing significant initiatives. There is no doubt that since its inception, ChatGPT has provided strong growth momentum for OpenAI.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently revealed during a communication with employees that the AI chatbot has become extremely popular this year, generating approximately $1.3 billion in revenue for the company. In contrast, OpenAI's total revenue in 2022 was only $28 million. The nearly fifty-fold annual revenue growth is astonishing.
According to reports, OpenAI is allowing employees to sell stock at a historic high valuation of $90 billion. The company previously projected that its revenue would exceed $1 billion in 2023, a target that has now been easily achieved. With nearly three months left in 2023, OpenAI's revenue this year is expected to reach even higher levels.
ChatGPT is seen as a superpower by many users, benefiting both beginner programmers and marketing creatives. This also explains the rapid growth of OpenAI.
Despite having strong allies, OpenAI still faces multiple challenges. The first is external threats: OpenAI needs to maintain a "moat" that may be shrinking. Although OpenAI has a first-mover advantage in the competition, rivals are also actively investing resources to develop their own versions.
A technology giant is developing the Gemini multimodal large model, which is highly anticipated to compete with OpenAI's current strongest GPT-4. Meanwhile, the open-source community is busy developing free AI models, trying to replicate the performance of commercial tools. If the open-source competitors can match or surpass GPT-4, OpenAI may face challenges in retaining paying users.
It is still unclear whether the recently added "view, listen, speak" features of ChatGPT can be a game-changer.
OpenAI also faces internal challenges. The company recently adjusted the "core values" on its official website, removing the term "thoughtful" while emphasizing "AGI focus" and "strong and combative." This shift indicates that OpenAI will prioritize achieving AGI.
To achieve the goal of AGI, OpenAI is accelerating the speed of product updates, continuously launching new products such as the DALL-E 3 painting model and the GPT-4v image recognition model.
According to reports, OpenAI plans to hold its first global developer conference on November 6, during which it will launch a major annual update for ChatGPT. New features include providing developers with increased memory storage capabilities and significantly reducing API usage costs. This upgrade is called Stateful API, which lowers application development costs by remembering conversation history.
